5 Signs that a Tree Is a Safety Hazard that You Shouldn’t Ignore

When big trees are unhealthy or improperly maintained, they can pose serious safety risks. Such trees can be more prone to toppling over in high winds, potentially causing injuries and property damage. Dead or Falling Branches Trees that have dead or dying branches can be a significant hazard. Branches that are brittle and break off can fall unexpectedly, causing injury to people or damage to property. If you notice branches that seem to be decaying or are simply bare, it's important to have them removed.  Cracked or Hollow Trunk A tree trunk that shows visible cracks or signs of hollowness is a strong indication that the tree's internal structure is weakening. Cracks in the trunk can be a result of disease, pest infestation, or old age. A hollow trunk suggests that the tree may have rotting wood or a compromised core, making it more likely to break or topple under stress. These trees should be carefully evaluated by an arborist to assess whether removal is necessary. Leaning Trees A tree that is visibly leaning in one direction could be a sign of structural instability. Leaning often occurs when the tree's root system is compromised, such as from soil erosion, root rot, or a past storm.
